Psychological abuse rarely leaves a mark anyone can photograph. This series shares short recordings from my marriage so that survivors, and the people around them, can hear what it sounds like and recognize it. New clips are added here as they are released.
If you are in danger, call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.
Clip 1: “Why didn’t you ever ask what I needed?”
Recorded October 29, 2018
What psychological abuse sounds like. Recorded October 29, 2018.
I asked my then-husband why he never asked what I needed. This is how he answered me: yelling orders about the house and dinner, with swearing, in our own home.
I’m sharing this because psychological abuse rarely leaves a mark anyone can photograph, and so many domestic violence survivors are told it “wasn’t that bad” or that they are remembering it wrong. Hearing it out loud helps people recognize it.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone and you are not imagining it. If you feel safe doing so, share your experience below. Your story could help someone else name what is happening to them.

Clip 12: “You are not going to find your unicorn.”
Recorded January 24, 2022
What psychological abuse sounds like. Recorded January 24, 2022.
This is my ex-husband talking to a friend, not to me. He said that you are not going to find your unicorn, the perfect wife and housewife. The card at the end is my reply.
I’m sharing this because the message that no partner could ever be good enough is devaluation. It keeps the person on the receiving end feeling unworthy, no matter how much they give. Hearing it out loud helps people recognize it.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone and you are not imagining it. If you feel safe doing so, share your experience below. Your story could help someone else name what is happening to them.
